Mary Winston Jackson was born in Hampton, Virginia, in 1921, in the same region where the federal aeronautics work that shaped her career would grow. She attended Black schools, graduated with honors, and earned degrees in mathematics and physical science from Hampton Institute in 1942. Before NASA became NASA, before electronic computers replaced human ones, mathematical labor was already central to flight research.

Jackson's path to Langley was not direct. She taught school, worked as a receptionist and bookkeeper, and spent time at home after the birth of her son. In 1951, she joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, known as NACA, at Langley. She entered the segregated West Area Computing unit, where Black women mathematicians performed calculations for engineers while navigating separate facilities and limited advancement.

West Computing was both opportunity and containment. It brought talented Black women into federal technical work, but within a segregated structure that marked them as separate. Dorothy Vaughan supervised the group and helped make it a powerful center of expertise. Jackson's skill soon moved her into work with engineer Kazimierz Czarnecki in the 4-foot by 4-foot Supersonic Pressure Tunnel. Wind-tunnel research demanded precision. Airflow, drag, transition, pressure, and shape were not abstractions. They affected aircraft performance and safety.

Czarnecki encouraged Jackson to pursue the training needed to become an engineer. The requirement included graduate-level math and physics courses offered through the University of Virginia, but the classes were held at segregated Hampton High School. Jackson had to petition the city for permission to attend with white students. The image is sharp: a woman already doing advanced technical work still needing official permission to sit in the classroom that could credential her.

She completed the courses and became NASA's first Black female engineer in 1958, the same year NACA became NASA. Her engineering specialty involved boundary-layer effects on aerospace vehicle configurations at supersonic speeds. By 1975, she had authored or co-authored twelve technical reports. Those reports matter because they place Jackson not only in a "Hidden Figures" cultural memory but in the actual technical record of aeronautical research.

The technical record also keeps the story from becoming only motivational. Boundary-layer research asks what happens to air close to the surface of an aircraft or test object, where friction and turbulence can change performance. Jackson's reports came from a world of wind tunnels, measurements, plots, and repeated tests. She belonged in the engineering story because she produced engineering work, not because later culture found her inspiring.

Jackson was also a community person. NASA's biography records her work with the Girl Scouts, United Way, and younger employees who needed guidance. That detail can sound soft until placed beside the institution she navigated. Mentorship was not extra. It was part of how people survived systems that had no formal intention of making them comfortable.

In 1979, Jackson made a striking career choice. Seeing limited advancement for women professionals at Langley, she left engineering and accepted a reduction in grade to become an equal opportunity specialist and Federal Women's Program Manager. That move complicates the usual success story. She had won a title many people would have protected. Instead, she stepped into administrative work because she could see that individual achievement did not repair institutional patterns by itself.

Mary Jackson's name is now attached to NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., and to the wider public memory of Hidden Figures. But the strongest version of her story is not simply "first Black woman engineer." It is the arc from segregated computation to technical authorship to structural advocacy. She broke through, then worked so other people would not have to break themselves against the same wall.
